About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of the Aquatic Manager, the lifeguard is responsible for keeping the aquatic facilities safe through supervision of an aquatic environment.

Requirements

  • Experience : No prior experience is required but experience with customer care and swimming is a plus.
  • Education: No education is required.
  • Skills: Completion of the International Lifeguard Training Program (Ellis & Associates) and pre-requisites: 200-yard swim, swim to the bottom of a 12-foot pool and retrieve a 10-lb brick, tread water for 1 minute.
  • Certifications: International Lifeguard Training Program (Ellis & Associates), Pool Lifeguard License or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Competencies: Applicants shall show competency in the following areas: Able to supervise patrons and provide feedback to management staff as needed, readily recall details necessary to perform the job, communicate clearly through written and verbal communication, responsible, dependable, demonstrate self-confidence, work cordially with all staff and patrons, able to resolve conflicts while remaining composed, and should be motivated to succeed!

Responsibilities

  • Prevent accidents by enforcing all Gurnee Park District policies, rules, and procedures
  • Maintain 10/20 Protection Standard at all times while on watch
  • Maintain an alert status at all times when on duty and avoid any unnecessary talking with patrons or other staff members
  • Maintain E & A Lifeguard License and perform all skills as required. Including attending at least 4 hours of training per month or more as scheduled.
  • Assist with special events
  • Lifeguards will wear Gurnee Park District Staff uniforms at all times while on duty. (T-shirt, hat or visor, polarized sunglasses, whistle, and sunscreen as required by E & A and GPD)
  • Lifeguards must pass the vision test annually as provided by PDRMA or wear corrective lenses as prescribed to meet the standard
  • Perform Lifeguard audits as assigned
  • Follow, promote and help implement the Gurnee Park District Customer Service Standards (SOFIE)
  • Follow up rescues, incidents, or accidents with necessary written reports in a timely fashion
  • Lifeguards release NO information regarding an incident or accident to anyone outside the Gurnee Park District staff
  • Assist with routine cleanup or maintenance work when asked by Aquatic Management Staff
  • Read and understand the Gurnee Park Districts Personnel Policy Manual and all other manuals including Lifeguard Training Manuals, and Aquatic Manual, and Risk Management Guidelines
  • Perform all other duties assigned to the best of your ability
  • Work as early morning lifeguard which include additional duties including opening/closing facility, providing supervision of patrons, cash handling, and checking all safety equipment at the beginning of each shift (Report any deficiencies to the manager immediately)
  • Perform seasonal maintenance tasks to prepare the facility and area
