About The Position

Performs routine public contact and safety work in teaching swimming lessons and serving as a pool lifeguard. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a high school or GED equivalent.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of the equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a comprehensive aquatics program
  • Skilled in the operation of listed tools and equipment; Skill in First Aid and CPR.
  • Ability to effectively teach swimming lesson
  • Ability to effectively enforce safety and health regulations relating to an aquatics program
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, participants, instructors, and the general public
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally
  • Ability to give and understand oral instructions.
  • First Aid, AED and CPR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area, standing at water’s edge or in an elevated chair with clear visibility of entire pool area.
  • Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed; report to Supervisor in writing any problems.
  • Checks the pool and deck for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  • Inspect locker rooms before and after shift.
  • Arrange for qualified substitute if needed and notify supervisor.
  • Attends all staff meetings and training as required.
  • Maintains positive relations with members, participants and other staff.
  • Teaches a swimming lessons according to a prescribed routine and curriculum.
  • Tests program participants for swimming skill levels; passes participants for participation in more advanced classes.
  • Assists in implementing various aquatics competitions throughout the year.
  • Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phone, running errands, picking up supplies needed for activities, conducting classes, selling tickets, collecting fees, helping set up for classes, events, etc.
  • Responds to public inquiries about aquatics programs made by telephone, correspondence, or during public meetings.
  • Maintains related records and statistics for various aquatics programs.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the swimming pool. Monitors and maintains pool filtration system.
  • Monitors pool water chemistry through testing of water samples. Adjusts chemistry as needed to maintain standards.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Officiates at swimming meets.
  • Serves as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.
