About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Manager, Lifeguards are responsible for all indoor and outdoor pool operations including lifesaving functions and teaching all aspects of swimming. Lifeguards also monitor mechanical equipment associated with pool maintenance. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and abilities required. Requirements

  • Knowledge of current first aid and CPR procedures.
  • Knowledge of current rules and regulations pertaining to pools.
  • Ability to pass lifeguard water test.
  • Ability to enforce these rules and regulations.
  • Ability to supervise all users of the pools.
  • Ability to communicate with all different types of people.
  • Ability to recognize swimmers in need of assistance.
  • Ability to recognize, respond, and remedy unsafe situations.
  • Must be at least 15 years of age.
  • Successful completion of the ARC Lifeguard Training Course.
  • Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.
  • Must satisfactorily pass a criminal background examination.

Responsibilities

  • Performs lifesaving functions in emergency situations and completes and files all accident reports for any injuries that occur at the pools.
  • Performs disciplinary actions and handles complaints and grievances of users.
  • Maintains a clean and safe pool environment and looks for ways to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
  • Performs maintenance duties, including inspections, and maintains all safety and rescue equipment.
  • Sets the criteria for the successful completion of swimming and water safety courses.
  • Plans, assigns, and reviews work for all public and private swimming lessons.
  • Maintains files and orders Red Cross supplies when needed.
  • Attends regularly scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.
  • Effectively and respectfully communicates and interacts with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and citizen customers.
  • Participates in training and education opportunities to maintain and improve proficiency.
  • Performs other related functions as assigned or apparent to achieve the goals and objectives of the Recreation Department.
