About The Position

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director and in accordance with Association policies, the Lifeguard should be able to motivate others in the areas of self-awareness and self-confidence through swimming and aquatics, be able to motivate and effectively communicate with members, parents and students, and exercise mature judgment and sound decision-making.

Requirements

  • Individuals considered for this job must take and pass an advanced swimming and rescue skills test.
  • YMCA Lifeguard or Red Cross lifeguard certification is required.
  • Individuals in this job must be at least 15 years of age and have the following abilities: exercise mature judgment and sound decision making; relate to people in a positive, but firm manner; observant; safety conscious; react calmly and quickly in an emergency; effectively communicate information on YMCA programs to members and participants; lift a minimum of 50 lbs and have full range of body movement.
  • Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and AED certifications must be obtained and maintained.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck, and surrounding areas.
  • Prevent accidents by scanning assigned zone from bottom to top and covering z one in compliance with the 10/10 rule.
  • Perform swim tests as required by association policy.
  • Enforce health and safety rules and maintain emergency readiness.
  • Respond to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Create an environment that is welcoming, nurturing and genuine for all members and guests.
  • Develop rapport and maintain effective relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
  • Able to work with other staff as part of a team.
  • Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Perform routine maintenance of pool, locker rooms, and surrounding areas to ensure cleanliness.
  • Check pool and rescue equipment and promptly report any problems.
  • Set up and put away equipment for recreational swims.
  • Participation and satisfactory completion of in-service trainings is mandatory.
  • Uphold the core values of the YMCA when dealing with people within the YMCA facilities and within the community.
  • Work scheduled shifts. Arrangements for substitutes must be previously approved by the Aquatics Director.
