DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Essential Job Functions Ensures safety of pool area including placement of all required safety equipment on lifeguard stands. Teaches swim classes in accordance with the Park District’s instructional swimming program. Reports on deck ready to work fifteen minutes prior to scheduled shift. Maintains professional manner at all times including: sitting upright in guard chair, continually scanning zone, vocally enforcing all rules with a positive attitude and maintaining discipline. Stays alert to the time and rotates as scheduled. Performs maintenance when assigned. Complies promptly with all requests and directions given by Head Lifeguards, Aquatic Center Manager and the Aquatic/Facility Supervisor. Respects the decisions and authority of all supervisors. Talks with patrons only when required. Gives polite informed answers to questions. During breaks: Checks locker room for cleanliness, fills soap and toilet paper dispensers as needed and picks up trash in the immediate vicinity. Remains within hearing distance in order to respond to an emergency situation at all times while on duty. End of day: Empties all trash receptacles and takes garbage to dumpsters, hoses locker rooms with disinfectant, cleans toilets, urinals, sinks, and showers, and hoses sand equipment and pool deck. Wears uniform on duty. No personal calls while on duty. Maintains and updates knowledge of current practices in First Aid, CPR, Lifeguard Training Certification, Water Safety, outdoor operations, and competitive swimming techniques. Assumes responsibility for the health and safety of the patrons. Responds quickly and effectively to all rescue or emergency situations. Performs first aid techniques and rescue procedures as necessary. Performs the job safely and in compliance with District policies, procedures, work and safety rules and the employee manual. Attends required trainings and meetings. Performs other duties assigned. SAFETY AND RISK MANAGEMENT 1. Maintains a working knowledge of all general agency and departmental-specific safety rules. 2. Uses material handling equipment or staff assistance when lifting and or moving objects 30 pounds or less. 3. Reports any work-related or patron injuries to supervisor promptly. 4. Attends required safety program and in-service education meetings. 5. Corrects unsafe conditions and/or reports them to supervisor. PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS Must work closely with coworkers and the general public. Experiences ongoing concerns for all safety and liability issues. Must have ability to deal with other people under stressful situations. May have to work under stressful situations when First Aid or CPR are required. PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS Lifting is occasional, usually 30 pounds or less. Must to respond to situations quickly and accurately. ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS May be required to work during various weather conditions, including hot temperatures. Exposure to various chemicals (i.e., chlorine, muriatic acid, cleaning materials and disinfectants) as used in routine aquatic maintenance. COGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONS Must be knowledgeable about all aquatic center operations and constantly strive for improvement. Must use good judgment at all times and be aware of immediate surroundings.
