The Opportunity Chelsea Piers is seeking full-time and part-time Lifeguards to join our team. Safety is our top priority and our Lifeguards are essential in holding up that standard in our Aquatics Department. As part of our Lifeguard team, you will be responsible for ensuring that our patrons are following all safety measures. You will be expected to monitor your area of responsibility at all times to scan for any dangerous situations such as drowning, injuries, etc. As a Lifeguard, you may also be assigned some operational duties to maintain pool standards and cleanliness. Qualified applicants may also have opportunities to teach in our swim lesson programming if desired.

Requirements

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard certification required.
  • At least 16 years old.
  • Participation in ongoing lifeguard training and on-the-spot evaluations and, if needed, remediation based on your Director's discretion.
  • Maintain all Lifeguard skills at test-ready standards at all times.
  • Physical Requirements: Capable of prolonged exposure to hot and humid environment.
  • Sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift at least 55 pounds.
  • Must be willing and able to complete the pre-requisite swim for lifeguard including deep water ARC course: Prerequisite 1: Jump into water and submerge fully, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both (swimming on the back is not permitted; swim goggles are allowed). Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs. Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or combination of both. Prerequisite 2: Starting in the water, swim 20 yards (the face may be in or out of the water; swim goggles not permitted). Surface dive (feet or head-first) to a depth of 8 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out, at, or near the surface. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain consistent surveillance of patrons in the facility
  • Act with immediate and appropriate protocol to secure the safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
  • Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival and transition of care to emergency medical services
  • Execute proper surveillance and rescue techniques when needed
  • Participates in training for CPR/AED/First Aid, lifeguard rescue skills, surveillance drills, and other job related skills
  • Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service
  • Performs various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility
  • Entering the water to assist with pool maintenance or pool orientation adjustment
  • Maintaining the pool decks cleanliness via various cleaning techniques
  • Assist with the Front Desk station as needed including but not limited to checking in members, answering phone calls and directing questions to the appropriate staff
  • Assisting patrons with lane assignments, reservations, and general lap swim etiquette
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
