About The Position

The YMCA of the Pikes Peak region is looking to recruit an observant Lifeguard to ensure the safety of visitors to our aquatic facility. The Lifeguard will explain safety rules to patrons, warn them about unsafe situations, and enforce policies on showers and proper attire. You will play an instrumental role in maintaining orderliness by inspecting swimming pool areas and locker rooms. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. You will maintain pool equipment and monitor and record pool temperatures. To ensure success you need to assess situations swiftly and make judicious decisions regarding the safety of swimmers. Top candidates are excellent communicators, swift and safety minded. Requirements

  • 15 years of age or older
  • Must pass a swim test and skills assessment of Details for Pre Swim (read thoroughly): Phase 1 Continuous (Can't stop) Swim 100 yards of front crawl Swim 100 yards of breaststroke Swim 50 yards of front crawl with head up Swim 50 yards of breaststroke with head up Swim 50 yards of elementary backstroke kick or eggbeater kick with hands on chest Phase 2 Tread water (no arms) for two minutes without stopping or resting Phase 3 Start in the water at one end of the pool (no goggles). Sprint for approximately 60 feet (20 yards) and then perform an arm-over-arm surface dive in 7 to 10 feet of water (or maximum depth of training facility). In a 25-yard pool, the 60-foot distance will be near the backstroke flags. Pick up and retrieve an object (dive ring) from the bottom of the pool, surface, hold the object with both hands, and tread water for at least one minute, using only your legs. Swim the remaining length of the pool on your back, holding the object with both hands. Place the object on the deck and hoist yourself out of water. Immediately begin compressions on an adult manikin for 100 compressions.
  • Completion of lifeguard training (we offer lifeguard training)
  • Proficient communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Proficient in interacting with people of various ages from diverse backgrounds
  • Available to work shifts
  • Physically fit, strong, agile and dexterous

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing activities at aquatic facilities
  • Explaining and enforcing rules, regulations and policies in a professional manner, to ensure safety of patrons
  • Maintain constant surveillance of pool area using systematic scanning techniques while maintaining a rescue ready position
  • Monitoring designated areas to recognize signs of danger
  • Warning swimmers regarding unsafe situations
  • Maintaining order in swimming areas
  • Responding to emergencies and rescuing swimmers in danger of drowning
  • Performing first aid procedures
  • Maintaining cleanliness and orderliness of all areas
  • Maintaining records and reports
  • Maintain compliance with the Association In-Service Policy
