About The Position

The Lifeguard/Water Safety Instructor provides for patron safety and first aid in coordination with aquatics safety personnel by enforcing park and pool rules, recognizing and responding to aquatic incidents during normal operations, and performing various water safety instruction and educational development. Work is done seasonally.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Lifeguarding and first aid skills.
  • Knowledge of pool safety and City policies.
  • Knowledge of water park rules for operation.
  • Knowledge of Water Safety Instruction techniques, styles, and methods.
  • Ability to identify distressed persons.
  • Ability to develop and implement strong instructional activities for water safety programs.
  • Ability to handle emergency situations quickly and effectively
  • Ability to swim, run, walk, stand, and perform a wide range of physical abilities.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • None
  • Lifeguarding and Water Safety Instructor Certification required before fulfilling lifeguard and/or water safety instructor responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Observes swimmers from guard stand or poolside and cautions swimmers of rule violations to enforce pool safety rules
  • Conducts appropriate emergency and rescue techniques including CPR and First Aid for distressed or drowning swimmers.
  • Administers first aid to pool patrons for injuries such as cuts, abrasions, sprains, and contusions to provide basic medical assistance as needed
  • Reports injuries, accidents, and assistance rendered to patrons to the pool manager and documents each occurrence to maintain proper files on such occurrences.
  • Cleans, checks, and maintains pool, pool area, and restrooms to ensure a clean and sanitary facility
  • Inspects pool equipment such as ladders, diving boards, and guard stands.
  • Monitors and documents water quality to ensure that the pool water maintains a proper chemical balance.
  • Communicates with the general public regarding lessons and other water safety instructional opportunities.
  • Instructs and teaches participants enrolled in the Learn to Swim program
  • Plans lessons, evaluates individual participant progress, and provides corrective feedback
  • Recruits, trains, and assigns class aides and assistants
  • Ensures there is a lifeguard on duty during lessons and instructional activities.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records and reports.
  • Assist with pre-season operational and maintenance tasks.
  • Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
