About The Position

The Lifeguard Trainer is responsible for assisting the Aquatics Directors and Aquatics Leadership Team with scheduling, evaluating, and training new and current lifeguard candidates, Swim Lesson Instructor candidates, and community members. Responsibilities include teaching courses to cross over candidates with non-YMCA certifications, teaching HSI Suite Certification courses, and teaching re-certification classes. This position implements all Y-USA course work for the above trainings. The Lifeguard Trainer is responsible for observing and directing all class participants, providing feedback and appropriate corrections as per curriculum guidelines. Y-policies, and Aquatics/Risk Management department direction.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard Certifications, Completed Facilitations Course YUSA, American Safety & Health Institute or American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR for the Professional Rescuer and American Safety & Health Institute, American Red Cross or American Heart Association Standard/Community First Aid certifications, Y-USA Lifeguard Instructor certification.
  • 1-2 years lifeguard experience with Y-Lifeguard Certifications
  • Ability to maintain required certifications
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.

  • Saturday and Sunday training days.
  • Monday for paperwork and planning.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the AQ Executive Director on ensuring trainings are being offered based on the demand of department needs.
  • Teach HSI Suite (Basic Life Support, First Aid, Emergency Oxygen) based on the demands of the department and community outreach.
  • Teach Y-USA Certification Courses for Lifeguards and Swim Lesson Instructors.
  • Complete all course paperwork accurately when the course is complete and send to the Trainer Admin.
  • Uphold all trainer requirements for position at all times.
  • Report all staff issues/concerns to Aquatics Leadership.
  • Reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Completes related reports as required.
  • Follows Minimum Standards of Safety for Aquatic Activities 7.301.
  • Understands and consistently enforces safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  • Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Maintains effective, positive relationships with members, participants and other staff.
  • Continuously monitors aquatic area for hazardous or unsafe conditions.
  • Immediately reports all hazardous or unsafe conditions to management and takes appropriate action.
  • Uses problem solving skills to make quick decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and recognize the potential for danger or injury.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue
  • Communicate with others immediately when responding to an incident or an emergency.
  • Must be able to communicate verbally, including projecting their voice across distances; communicate swiftly and clearly with emergency personnel over the telephone and or in person; and effectively give and receive directions.
  • Perform all rescue, resuscitation, and survival skills.
  • Act swiftly and assist in an emergency and act even when unsure whether a person is really in danger.
  • Work with the aquatics leadership to ensure enough trainings are being offered based on the demand of department needs.
  • Uphold all trainer requirements for position at all times.
  • Report all staff issues/concerns to Trainer Admin and Ops Exec.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management.
