About The Position

Lifeguard / Swim Instructor - Summer Aquatics Staff The Deerfield Park District has a mission to provide outstanding parks, services, facilities, and recreation programs that enrich lives, promote healthy living, and provide memorable experiences. To support our over 25 parks and facilities we have a dedicated and diverse workforce of over 500 staff seasonally. Be a part of a supportive team of peers while staying active and learning new skills. Our Lifeguards help maintain an environment of safety in our Aquatic facilities. We provide opportunities to grow into a leadership role. We are looking for: Lifeguards to begin training in April and May for work in summer; June through September 2nd. Targeting between 20-40 hours a week with a mix of training, lifeguarding, and teaching swimming. Applicants should expect to work both as a lifeguard and a swim instructor. Pay rate: starts at $17 for summer Applicants are not required to have lifeguard certification to be considered for position. Paid training is available for both swim instruction and lifeguarding.

Requirements

  • Must be 16 years old or older (15 year olds: 15 of 15 slots are taken; no more room for work permit employees)
  • Enjoys having fun!
  • Ability to swim
  • Ability to pass lifeguard certification during paid training; American Red Cross
  • Ability to pass swim instructor training during paid training
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Must demonstrate vision capabilities of 20/30 corrected or best corrected for lifeguarding
  • If needed, must always wear corrective eye wear to maintain 20/30 or better vision while lifeguarding
  • Specific psychological demands of this job include the ability to remain calm under stress levels associated with constant public contact
  • We abide by the Illinois Park District Code

Responsibilities

  • Ability to focus and maintain the 30 second standard
  • Performs life-saving techniques including in-pool rescues, CPR, AED, and Oxygen administration and first aid
  • Respond to emergencies
  • Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe activities and enforces facility rules
  • Cleans the pool deck area and locker rooms
  • Installs or removes lane lines
  • Must have the ability to perform the physical and cognitive skills necessary to achieve and maintain a lifeguard and CPR certification as prescribed by the agency
  • Responds to concerns and requests from members, residents and guests with a sense of urgency and take the necessary corrective action including follow up
  • Attends all appropriate staff meetings and required in-service trainings
  • Customer Service oriented
  • Be comfortable in the water and around children.
  • Ability to enter the water for prolonged periods of time
  • Confidence in leading groups of children and teaching swimming skills
