About The Position

The Lifeguard at the Y in Central Maryland is responsible for ensuring the safety and cleanliness of the swimming pool during operating hours. This role is essential for safeguarding the health of members, class participants, and guests while enforcing safety guidelines and policies. Lifeguards are expected to embody the values of the YMCA and contribute to a mission-driven organization focused on community well-being.

Requirements

• Must be certified in lifeguarding and CPR/AED for professional rescuers.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work with diverse populations.

Nice To Haves

• Previous experience as a lifeguard or in a similar role.
• Knowledge of pool maintenance and safety regulations.

Responsibilities

• Report to work in uniform at least ten minutes before the assigned shift to receive instructions.
• Attend regular in-service training sessions.
• Ensure the safety of all swimmers during the shift and enforce pool rules.
• Conduct chemical readings of pool conditions according to bathing code and make necessary adjustments.
• Maintain the upkeep of the pool area and equipment, notifying the supervisor of any repairs needed.
• Prepare the program/service area with necessary equipment and ensure proper storage after use.
• Engage, orient, and assist all participants when not actively guarding.
• Promote a professional image and maintain a clean and safe environment at all times.
• Work effectively with a diverse population, including all ages, genders, and sexual orientations.
• Attend and actively participate in all assigned meetings.
• Incorporate the four character values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
• Communicate the Y mission and objectives to the community.
• Assist in other areas as assigned.
