The position involves maintaining active surveillance of the pool area, ensuring the safety and well-being of all patrons. The lifeguard must know and review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the 'safe-in-six' model. This includes completing related reports as required. The lifeguard is expected to respond to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner and to consistently apply safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Remaining calm and objective under pressure is essential, as is maintaining accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code. The lifeguard will perform equipment checks, ensure appropriate equipment is available, check the pool for hazardous conditions upon arrival, and conduct chemical testing when not guarding, taking appropriate action as necessary.
