The City of Torrance is seeking Lifeguards and Aquatics Instructors to staff the Benstead Plunge. The Community Services Department is committed to providing quality services, activities, programs, and facilities for all those who live, learn, work, and play in the City of Torrance. The Recreation Services Division oversees recreation activities including youth and adult sports, management of city facilities, and a variety of special events throughout the year. The Victor E. Benstead Plunge is a heated Olympic sized outdoor pool that has been serving the community since 1956, offering a wide variety of Aquatic Programs and Classes year-round.

  • Enforce pool safety rules and regulations
  • Monitor swimming and other pool activities
  • Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning
  • Apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid
  • Inspect swimming pool for cleanliness and perform routine maintenance
  • Keep a daily log of rescues and other emergencies and prepare written reports of these activities
  • Assist in teaching swimming techniques
  • Teach swimming techniques, diving, water polo, and competitive and synchronized swimming
  • May coach the swim team and officiate at swim meets
  • Possession of current Red Cross First Aid certificate
  • Possession of current Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR certificate
  • Possession of current Red Cross Lifeguard Training certificate
  • One or more seasons of experience as a lifeguard or swim instructor is desirable
  • For Aquatics Instructor: Requires current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certificate
  • American Red Cross Title 22 First Aid for Public Safety Personnel is desired
  • Part-time, non-civil service position
  • Flexible shift hours including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays
