About The Position

Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is looking for a dedicated Life Support Operator to join our team in supporting the health and well-being of aquatic and semi-aquatic species. We seek a subject matter expert in aquatic animal life support operators (AALSO) to care for our aquatic systems and animals. Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens' announced “REZOOVENATION: The Campaign to Inspire will expand wellness-inspired habitats for animal care, grow conservation initiatives, offer improved educational spaces and guest services, and introduce new species. This is a Manatee Critical Care Center expansion, that includes a new 330,000-gallon Manatee River aquarium.

Requirements

  • At least 2+ years of hands-on experience in a similar role, preferably in a zoo, aquarium, or aquaculture facility.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and a solid understanding of life support systems and water quality equipment.
  • Working knowledge of water chemistry, filtration systems, and electronic monitoring tools.
  • Familiarity with regulatory standards (USDA, USFWS, AZA, AALSO) and proven ability to maintain compliance.
  • Dependable, accountable, and team-oriented with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
  • Ability to adhere to the physical requirements for the role, as necessary for effective performance.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in life support and/or water quality through AALSO.
  • Understanding of AZA and USDA standards for aquatic and non-aquatic animal care.
  • Experience with large-scale aquariums, ozone systems, and climate control systems.
  • Knowledge of water quality systems, water chemistry analysis techniques, pool equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Support daily operations of recirculating aquaculture systems, aquatic tank washers, ozone generators, HVAC, and integrated electronic water quality monitoring systems.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain life support systems and equipment.
  • Conduct precise water quality testing and make adjustments to optimize living environments.
  • Perform husbandry duties to ensure optimal water quality, including managing fecal matter and monitoring parameters.
  • Minimize interactions with species to maintain a healthy aquatic environment.
