About The Position

This position is responsible for the planning and provision of instruction and services to students, K-12, enrolled in the AIU-operated Special Education Schools. The instructor collaborates closely with other professional school-based personnel in designing lessons and activities that address specific learners IEP goals while also exposing students to the PA Academic Standards. The instructor needs to supervise and direct non-professional staff in support of instructional and behavioral goals for students.

Requirements

  • Valid PA certification in Special Education PK-12 required.
  • Ability to utilize email, Microsoft Office programs, and student information systems (i.e., IEP Writer, Skyward) to manage communication, information and records
  • Ability to follow all administration policies and guidelines governing students by maintaining a professional demeanor, following AIU policies, building procedures and the Pennsylvania professional code of conduct.
  • Current Act 114, Act 34, Act 151 and NSOR Clearances required prior to an offer (must be dated within 1 year of hire date).
  • School Personnel Health Record (Form H511.340) must be completed and received by Human Resources prior to hire date.

Responsibilities

  • Develops lesson plans and units that address the PA Academic Standards to ensure exposure to the general education curriculum for students with disabilities.
  • Instructs students in whole groups, small groups and individual sessions using appropriate adaptations and modifications to address learner’s IEP goals and learning objectives.
  • Monitors student progress, using a variety of assessment techniques (e.g., diagnostic, formative, benchmark, summative tools) to monitor student achievement and inform instructional planning.
  • Implements classroom level and individual behavior management programs, using evidence-based practices, to reduce non-academic barriers to student achievement.
  • Maintains records (e.g., attendance, behavior, academic performance) using formal and informal information systems, in order to collect accurate student information.
  • Communicates with parents/guardians and district personnel through a variety of formal and informal means (e.g. report cards, conferences, newsletters, progress reports, home school logs) to facilitate partnerships focusing on student achievement.
  • Develops Individualized Education Programs and Reevaluation Reports, based on student performance data, which comply with federal and state regulations and local guidelines, and participates in IEP team meetings.
  • Manages and works collaboratively with classroom personnel (e.g., paraprofessionals, Personal Care Assistants), using clear and direct communication techniques, supporting students, academic, social, emotional and behavioral goals.
  • Collaborates with related service providers and other staff, using a consultative model, ensuring that relevant information affecting students’ special education program is shared and acted upon.
  • Promotes students’ products through physical and/or digital representation (e.g. bulletin boards, displays, student products), showcasing learners’ production and enhancing school climate.
  • Complete other duties (e.g., bus duty, lunch duty) as assigned by the building principal or special education supervisor.
