About The Position

The Life Safety Specialist will report to the VP Quality & Regulatory Affairs and has primary responsibility for assessing and monitoring Life Safety Code (LSC) related issues. Success in this role requires active knowledge and utilization of Life Safety Code and Health Care Facilities Code (NFPA 101 and 99), effective workflow and workload management, and working knowledge of regulatory reporting requirements with a focus on timeliness, thoroughness, and accuracy. The incumbent will conduct Life Safety Code assessments/building inspections for healthcare buildings, perform audits including fire safety evaluation systems, Joint Commission's Physical Environment compliance reviews, and Life Safety Building Maintenance Programs. They will ensure compliance with the Life Safety Code and applicable reference manuals, provide life safety training to employees, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of Life Safety and Building Codes, CMS, and contracted-state regulatory standards. Collaboration with Quality & Regulatory leadership, CMS, and State Regulatory Compliance is essential to ensure ongoing compliance. The role demands strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with an ability to adapt quickly to changes in scope or direction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, or fire safety engineering OR Five (5) years of life safety experience
  • Three (3) years' experience in providing Life Safety Code Building Assessments in a healthcare setting utilizing NFPA's Life Safety Code NFPA 101 (2012 ed) and its reference manuals
  • Three (3) years of experience with NFPA 101 (2012 ed) Life Safety Code Assessment – Hospital
  • Certified Life Safety Specialist for Health Care (CLSS-HC) through the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) (to be completed as established by department)

  • Certified Healthcare Facilities Manager (CHFM) through the American Hospital Association (AHA)

Responsibilities

  • Conduct actual Life Safety Code assessments/building inspections for healthcare buildings utilizing the NFPA IOI (2012 ed)
  • Audits that include fire safety evaluation systems, the Joint Commission's Physical Environment compliance reviews, Life Safety Building Maintenance Programs (BMP), and other requirements as determined by the Referenced Publications of NFPA JOI Life Safety Code
  • Ensure compliance with the Life Safety Code and applicable reference manuals
  • Provide life safety training to employees
  • Well organized, analytic problem solver, and detail oriented
  • Responsibilities include all accreditation and certification programs
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of Life Safety and Building Codes, CMS and contracted-state regulatory standards, and communicate technical changes across AAAHC operational areas, Standards Development, the IQI and Learning departments as appropriate
  • Collaborates with Quality & Regulatory leadership, CMS, State Regulatory Compliance to ensure ongoing compliance with CMS and contracted-state regulatory requirements
  • Success in this role requires active knowledge and utilization of Life Safety Code and Health Care Facilities Code (NFPA 101 and 99), effective workflow and workload management, and working knowledge of regulatory reporting requirements with focus on timeliness, thoroughness, and accuracy
