About The Position

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), Division of Health Care Facilities Licensure and Certification (DHCFLC) is seeking experienced candidates to serve as a Life Safety Code Surveyor to conduct comprehensive inspections of health care facilities in the Commonwealth. Ideal candidate will have experience with life safety code regulations and emergency preparedness, preferably in a health care setting as well as an understanding of regulations and policies that apply to health care facilities in Massachusetts. The candidate will need access to reliable transportation as this is a field-based position with extensive travel statewide as well as occasional travel into the Division’s main office in Marlborough.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils and materials of which (B) at least two years must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
  • Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License may be required.
  • Capacity to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, including agency officials, staff associates, other employees, providers, vendors, and health care administrators.
  • Skilled in exercising a high degree of initiative, judgment, discretion, confidentiality, and decision-making to achieve objectives.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to health, environmental, and fire safety conditions in health care facilities.
  • Familiarity with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 101 Life Safety Code and other related codes/physical environment standards.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills with the capacity to demonstrate strong interpersonal, interviewing, teamwork, communication, and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects and surveys health care facilities for regulatory compliance and to determine compliance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 101 Life Safety Code and other related codes and/or physical environment standards for certification and licensure and documents findings gathered during inspections.
  • Investigates fire incidents and complaints.
  • Based on assignment, may review, and establish schedules for maintenance and repair of facilities.
  • Drafts reports on facilities and services relative to compliance with federal requirements and state regulations (based on on-site inspections and document reviews).
  • Evaluates plans of correction submitted from health care facilities and conducts follow-up visits to determine ongoing compliance regulations for certification and licensure.
  • Organizes and assists in Department orientations, in-service training programs, and provider training/workshops.
