About The Position

Responsible for maintaining a high standard of security and protection for college students, faculty, staff, property. Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities 1. Provides for the safety of students, faculty, staff, and security of all District/Campus buildings and equipment by preserving law and order through enforcing laws and regulations. 2. Maintains knowledge and compliance of legal requirements. 3. Ensures policies, procedures, and reports are in compliance. 4. Patrol assigned campus (es) by walking or driving within district's jurisdiction. 5. Respond to all calls on campus (es) concerning accidents, and reports of suspicious activity. 6. Respond and investigate all criminal offenses that occur within district's jurisdiction. 7. Collect and preserve evidence for criminal investigations including witness statements and physical evidence. 8. Arrest perpetrators, file appropriate charges, and ensure placement in jail or juvenile detention centers for law violations as necessary. 9. Help provide traffic control at athletic events, school closings or openings, or at any other time. 10. Provide protection to or escort district personnel or students as needed. 11. Operate all equipment according to established safety procedures. 12. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, physical records, and documents as required, including affidavits for arrest, incident reports, and activity reports. 13. Ensures all officers keep their Laredo College Campus Police Department Standard Operating Procedures Manual updated. 14. Responsible for compliance of Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Rule 218.9. Continuing firearms proficiency requirements. 15. Participate in recruitment, selection and background activities, including but not limited to: proctoring examinations, performing background checks, and maintaining required records on files. 16. Supervise, monitor, operate CCTV system and respond to suspicious activity within district's jurisdiction. 17. Monitor Emergency-Talk-A-Phones and report any malfunctions. 18. Supervise, monitor, and operate safety and security alarm system and response. 19. Respond and provide medical assistance to include CPR/AED, First Aid and other welfare concerns. 20. Provide battery jumper cables, open locked vehicles, and tire air assistance. 21. Responsible for safekeeping of building keys and related tasks. 22. Open office doors in emergency situations after hours. 23. Make emergency notifications on campus (es). 24. Manage campus parking. 25. Give safety and law enforcement lectures. 26. Maintain a vigorous college-wide safety program. 27. Assist police personnel in performing their duties. 28. Checks and evaluates police personnel performance. 29. Assist the Chief of Police in personnel matters on employment, training and grievances. 30. Responsible for follow-up reports for all incidents on campus. 31. Oversees the general operation of the department with regard to personnel, absenteeism and tardiness, which are detrimental to campus safety. 32.l n the event of absences, see that an officer is assigned to replace the absent officer. 33. Hold departmental meetings as often as necessary to insure smooth functioning of departmental affairs. 34. Conduct in-service training on updates of the Texas Penal Code, the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure and any other related statute. 35. Collects statistics and prepares the Uniform Crime Report in compliance with The Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990. 36. Performs additional related duties assigned by the Chief of Police.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree
  • 10 years law enforcement experience.
  • 5 years of experience rank of Sergeant or higher with supervisory administrative experience.
  • Texas Peace Officer license.
  • Master Peace Officer license.
  • Valid Texas Driver's license.
  • Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray certificate.
  • Expandable Baton certificate.
  • Current handgun proficiency certificate as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 10 years of experience rank of Sergeant or higher with supervisory administrative experience
  • Experienced in the use of personal computer software programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of the Texas Penal Code, Texas Code of Criminal Procedure and Federal Statutes.
  • Knowledge of techniques of criminal investigation, including knowledge of police report writing.
  • Knowledge of all laws relating to subduing offenders, use of handgun, handcuffs, OC spray and expandable baton.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise important human relations skills in establishing and maintaining effective work relations with district students, employees and the public.
