The Lieutenant-Police Officer position at Methodist Hospital is a full-time role primarily focused on ensuring the safety and security of the hospital environment. This position operates on a night shift schedule from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM. The Lieutenant will provide direction and guidance to team members, guests, and patients, playing a crucial role in counseling, coaching, and evaluating subordinate personnel. The officer will assist teams in de-escalating tense, uncertain, and emotional situations while proactively working to prevent crime and safety incidents. As the shift commander, the Lieutenant supervises sergeants, police officers, and Public Safety Officers, issuing work assignments and overseeing their activities. The role includes completing and approving work schedules to ensure proper shift coverage. The Lieutenant will conduct rounds and patrols in and around properties owned, leased, or occupied by Indiana University Health, responding to calls for service and investigating criminal activities and vehicle crashes as necessary. In addition to enforcing IU Health rules, regulations, policies, and state statutes, the Lieutenant is responsible for maintaining records and logs, completing written reports, and performing physical security screenings as required. The officer will also assist other public safety agencies and respond to calls for assistance, assuming on-scene command of critical incidents. This role requires the ability to control and assess situations, identify appropriate actions to preserve crime scenes, compile critical information, and coordinate activities with other jurisdictions. The Lieutenant acts in the capacity of a senior departmental officer in the absence of a more senior-ranking officer and performs other duties as assigned by the chain of command.
