About The Position

Provides advanced vocational nursing work. Work involves providing for the care, treatment, and general welfare of patients. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a Licensed Vocational Training Program.
  • Three years full-time, wage-earning experience as a vocational nurse.
  • Must have a valid, current, and unrestricted license to practice licensed vocational nursing as approved by the Texas Board of Nursing.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Certified Texas Contract Manager (CTCM) certification within twelve months from the date of employment.
  • Must maintain valid license(s) and Certified Texas Contract Manager (CTCM) certification for continued employment in position.
  • Knowledge of vocational nursing techniques, procedures, practices and theory, sanitation and personal hygiene, and of medical terminology and techniques.
  • Knowledge of health care services and documentation.
  • Knowledge of methods, techniques, and practices of medical records.
  • Knowledge of investigative methods and practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and statutes.
  • Skill to conduct complex reviews, evaluate records and data, and provide consultation.
  • Skill in the correlation of laboratory, electrocardiogram, and radiographic data with clinical data from health appraisals and physical examinations.
  • Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.
  • Skill to coordinate with other staff, departments, officials, agencies, organizations, and the public.
  • Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Skill in problem-solving techniques.
  • Skill to prepare and maintain accurate records, files, and reports.
  • Skill to review technical data and prepare technical reports.
  • Skill to plan work in order to meet established guidelines.
  • Skill in the use of computers and related equipment in a stand-alone or local area network environment.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent to include word processing, spreadsheet, database, or presentation software programs.
  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry under 15 lbs., perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, and operate motor equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Correctional nursing experience preferred.
  • Computer operations experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of managed health care and utilization review concepts preferred.
  • Knowledge of National Commission on Correctional Health Care and American Correctional Association policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and standards preferred.
  • Knowledge of agency and departmental organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides program specific and technical assistance to agency staff, provider agencies, the medical community, and other organizations; and assists in monitoring and facilitating inmate access to medical care and services.
  • Assists in conducting on-site clinical reviews, data gathering, quality improvement audits, operational review audits, special audits of medical departments, managed health care utilization, and investigations of healthcare complaints; and participates in assessing and evaluating methods, techniques, practices of health care services, medical records, and documentation.
  • Reviews inmate medical records, unit records, and reports; gathers, compiles, and analyzes medical treatment, procedures, and documentation; ensures compliance with agency and division policies, procedures, rules, and regulations; and prepares nursing and medical summaries in relation to inmate healthcare services rendered.
  • Researches technical and policy issues regarding inmate healthcare; reviews department rules and regulations, division policies, and facility procedures; and participates in evaluating methods, techniques, and practices of health care services and medical records documentation.
  • Participates in the analysis of health care activities and makes recommendations for improvement; participates in planning and conducting various health training courses; assists in developing training films and materials; and assists in evaluating the effectiveness of education programs.
  • Prepares correspondence, reports, forms, and documents pertaining to audits or investigations.
  • Performs a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.
