About The Position

The Gladys Porter Zoo is seeking a Licensed Veterinary Technologist to join our Animal Health team. Home to a collection of approximately 1,500 animals, the Zoo's mission centers on the preservation of nature through education, conservation and research. This position offers a prospective candidate the opportunity to provide veterinary care to a diverse range of species as well as native wildlife.

Requirements

  • Maintain Texas license in good standing
  • Hold or be able to attain a valid Texas driver's license
  • Ability to work in both extreme heat and cold
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays when required
  • The ideal candidate will be a graduate of an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Medical Technology program, holding licensure in veterinary medical technology (LVT, RVT, or CVT) or having the ability to sit for the National and Texas State exam within six months of hire.
  • Candidates should have a strong work ethic, be a team player, and have demonstrated interest in zoo, wildlife and aquatic animal medicine.
  • Two to three years of general/companion exotics practice and/or zoological settings is a plus.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in ZIMS Medical Records system, Microsoft Word and Excel are a plus
  • Ability to speak Spanish is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Assist the veterinary staff in all aspects of zoological medicine and surgery
  • Accurately monitor animals for situations such as anesthetic procedures, hospitalizations and surgical recoveries
  • Perform laboratory analyses, including but not limited to: in-house bloodwork, urinalyses, cytology and fecal examinations
  • Perform pharmacological calculations under the guidance of the veterinarian; fill prescriptions
  • Report to the veterinarian, hospital manager and senior technician/laboratory supervisor as required
  • Maintain organized and clean hospital and office areas
  • Participate in general housekeeping of the clinic on a daily basis
  • Participate in the husbandry, enrichment and medical care of all hospitalized patients
  • Conduct animal restraint with proficiency
  • Communicate, in-person, via phone and/or electronically with hospital team, zoo staff, wildlife officers, veterinary reps, laboratories, school officials and the general public
  • Assist in the instruction of high school, college and veterinary students
  • Participate in maintaining hospital inventory and processing invoices
  • Participate in the receipt, rehabilitation, and release of wildlife species
  • Participate in after hours on-call emergencies
  • Maintain daily medical, behavior and welfare records for zoo collection and wildlife species
  • Participate in necropsy and sample submissions as required
  • Ability to appropriately log and maintain the use of controlled substances; maintain and track the expirations of all drug inventory
  • Participate in special projects, approved research or special events for the Zoo
  • Maintain safe hospital environment; have knowledge of the appropriate disposal of expired drugs and biohazardous waste
  • Assist in the maintenance of hospital equipment
