About The Position

The licensed veterinary technician plays a vital role as the doctor's right hand in caring for our patients. From the very start of the exam, they’re there to support both the pet and the doctor—helping with the examination, assisting in diagnostics and treatment, and making sure everything is clearly communicated to the pet’s family. Their compassionate care and teamwork help make every visit smooth, reassuring, and Fear Free.

Requirements

  • High school diploma is required.
  • Fear Free Certification is required (training and certification can be provided).
  • Equivalent Veterinary Technician Certification (RVT, LVT) required
  • Preferred two years’ experience as veterinary technician.
  • Experience working with animals.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in computer record-keeping systems.
  • Excellent organization skills to efficiently multitask.

Responsibilities

  • Provides compassionate care to patients and clients with strong Fear Free principles.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with hospital medical policies and procedures.
  • Prepares and maintains the exam rooms and treatment areas.
  • Assists veterinarians in examinations, surgeries, and medical procedures Obtains vitals, weight and history, starts notes, and administers treatments.
  • Assists the doctor in medical, surgical and dental procedures; prepares patients for surgery; assists the doctor in administering anesthesia; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers fluids and other injectable medications.
  • Performs animal catheterization, venipuncture, takes sterile urine samples, does digital radiology and anesthesia monitoring, administers injections, and gives oral medications as directed and in compliance with the Delaware veterinary practice act
  • Has the ability to triage urgent/critical care patients, monitors all vital signs, is able to perform CPR, knows how to administer oxygen and use oxygen chamber, and administers drugs during veterinary critical care situations.
  • Assists in restraining pets.
  • Performs clinical laboratory procedures.
  • Is proficient at performing diagnostics, including radiographs, EKGs, bloodwork, and other diagnostic testing.
  • Admits and discharges patients.
  • Counsels clients on various aspects of animal care.
  • Makes follow-up calls to clients.
  • Communicates usage and dosage for all prescription drugs and can readily explain them to the clients.
  • Cleans all surgical materials.
  • Stocks the operating room to prepare for surgery.
  • Maintains an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies as determined by the inventory control system.
  • Assists other staff members as required.
  • Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other employees.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Proven ability to confidently support surgical procedures under minimal direction.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Practice Management Systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and execute standard operating procedures and hospital protocols to maximize productivity and patient satisfaction.
  • All aspects of surgery including but not limited to: Cleaning and prep of surgery instruments, assisting in surgery, dosing medications, recovering patients, log all drugs, recovery and discharge.
  • Maintains accurate detailed medical records and documentation for each patient.
  • Educates pet owners on proper animal husbandry practices and post-operative care.
  • Assists with sani shave and medical shaves as needed to maintain patient hygiene and comfort.
  • Supports the overall cleanliness of the facility, including equipment sterilization, sweeping, moping, and restocking.
  • Knowledge of animal physiology and behavior is essential.
  • Experience with laboratory procedures related to veterinary medicine.
  • Skills in animal husbandry, including proper feeding and handling techniques.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment while also being self-motivated.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with pet owners compassionately and effectively.
  • Must be able to lift over 50 pounds and stand most of the day.
  • Enjoys and has the ability to train, teach and develop veterinary support staff in technical skill development, animal husbandry, client education, restraint, and other assigned areas.
