About The Position

The Cornell University Hospital for Animals seeks a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT II) to support a fast-paced, high-volume surgical service within a teaching hospital environment. This position plays a vital role in ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care through hands-on surgical nursing support and strict adherence to aseptic standards. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate closely with veterinarians, technicians, and learners while contributing to excellent clinical outcomes and continuous improvement in surgical services. The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Perform the duties of a scrub nurse on various, complex orthopedic and soft tissue surgical procedures. Maintain surgical log records and ensure charges are accurate and complete . Assist the veterinarians in pre-operative examinations, treatments and procedures while regularly updating veterinarians with any changes in condition. Evaluate inventory and restock needed supplies in patient receiving, treatment, operating rooms & general supply areas. Instruct veterinary students, and occasionally residents, in techniques of small animal restraint and handling, patient monitoring, injections, specimen collection, blood tests, and bandaging techniques. Employees working in the hospital must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in Veterinary Technology, and at least 1 year of experience as an LVT or equivalent combination
  • NYS licensure or eligible to be licensed
  • Excellent communication, team building and organizational skills essential.
  • Must have the ability to meet the physical demands of the position, which includes, but are not limited to, stressful situations, prolonged standing and kneeling, and lifting heavy patients that may exceed 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment handling multiple tasks with competing deadlines, while paying close attention to details.
  • Will need to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships including communicating with staff, students, technicians, veterinarians and clients in a professional manner at all times.

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years of experience as a licensed veterinary technician with surgical experience preferred.
