About The Position

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT II) to join the Maddie's Shelter Medicine Program (MSMP). This position is integral to the daily operations of MSMP, which provides essential medical and surgical care to animals at the Tompkins County shelter and offers targeted outreach veterinary services to regional shelters and community pet owners. The MSMP team consists of faculty clinicians and LVTs who mentor veterinary students and interns, ensuring that they deliver exceptional care to animals in various settings, including shelters and clinics. The LVTs at MSMP play a crucial role in providing technical and instructional support for High-Quality, High-Volume Spay Neuter Surgery (HQHVSN) and other surgical procedures, including soft tissue surgeries and dentistry. In this role, the LVT will serve as the primary anesthetist for surgeries conducted at local shelters, the Small Animal Community Practice (SACP), and the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) locations, under the supervision of a faculty clinician. Responsibilities include providing patient care through Fear Free restraint techniques, administering medical treatments, collecting specimens, and performing diagnostic imaging. The LVT will also act as a scrub/rotating nurse during sterilization surgeries and other ancillary surgical procedures, ensuring careful patient monitoring and assessment while implementing established medical and anesthetic protocols. Additionally, the LVT will provide instruction and support to veterinary students, interns, and externs in clinical and anesthetic techniques, fostering a learning environment that emphasizes high standards of care. Candidates for this position must be prepared to meet the physical demands associated with veterinary care, including prolonged standing, kneeling, and the ability to lift and restrain patients weighing over 50 lbs. The position is located onsite in Ithaca, NY, and requires a valid driver's license to operate a large mobile van for outreach services. The work schedule may vary to accommodate the needs of the program, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and university holidays.
