About The Position

Fondren Orthopedics is seeking a highly skilled and dependable Licensed Surgical Assistant to support one orthopedic surgeon in a fast-paced, high-volume practice. This role is integral to delivering exceptional surgical care and ensuring efficient patient flow in both the operating room and clinic settings. The ideal candidate is clinically strong, detail-oriented, and thrives in a collaborative environment.

Requirements

  • Current and valid Licensed Surgical Assistant credential (state and/or national, as applicable).
  • Minimum 2 years of orthopedic surgical assisting experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of orthopedic procedures, instrumentation, and implants.
  • BLS certification (ACLS a plus).
  • Proficiency with EMR systems and basic computer skills.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods and assist during lengthy surgical procedures.
  • Manual dexterity to handle surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to lift and position patients with appropriate assistance.
  • Schedule may include early mornings and variable hours based on surgical schedule.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience assisting a single surgeon in a high-volume orthopedic practice.
  • Familiarity with outpatient surgery centers and hospital OR environments.
  • Ability to flex between OR and clinic responsibilities as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provide first-assist support to the orthopedic surgeon during surgical procedures.
  • Prepare and maintain the sterile field; anticipate surgeon needs throughout procedures.
  • Assist with patient positioning, draping, retraction, suctioning, hemostasis, wound closure, and dressing application.
  • Ensure proper handling and accountability of surgical instruments, implants, and supplies.
  • Adhere strictly to sterile technique, safety protocols, and infection control standards.
  • Participate in surgical time-outs and patient verification processes.
  • Review patient charts, imaging, and surgical plans prior to procedures.
  • Assist with pre-op patient preparation and post-op recovery instructions as directed.
  • Monitor patients for immediate post-operative concerns and communicate findings to the surgeon and care team.
  • Document surgical assistance accurately and timely in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Assist the surgeon during in-office procedures and injections.
  • Support patient flow by rooming patients, obtaining histories, and assisting with exams as directed.
  • Provide patient education related to surgical procedures, post-op care, and recovery expectations.
  • Work closely with OR staff, anesthesia, nursing, and clinic teams to ensure seamless care.
  • Maintain a professional, patient-centered demeanor at all times.
  • Participate in quality improvement, safety initiatives, and continuing education as required.
