About The Position

The Licensed Surgical Assistant I plays a critical role in supporting surgical procedures by providing skilled assistance to surgeons and the surgical team. This position ensures that all surgical instruments and equipment are prepared, sterilized, and readily available to maintain a sterile environment and facilitate efficient operations. The assistant actively participates in patient care before, during, and after surgery, ensuring safety and adherence to medical protocols. Working closely with surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, the Licensed Surgical Assistant I contributes to optimal surgical outcomes and patient recovery. This role requires a strong commitment to precision, teamwork, and maintaining the highest standards of surgical care within the retail trade healthcare setting at the FONDREN-Main Street location Texas Orthopedic Hospital.

Requirements

  • Valid surgical assistant license or certification as required by state regulations.
  • Completion of an accredited surgical assistant training program.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of surgical instruments, sterile techniques, and operating room procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced surgical environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working as a surgical assistant in a clinical or hospital setting.
  • Advanced certifications such as Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA).
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills developed through prior healthcare roles.
  • Additional training in patient safety and infection control.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and organize surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment prior to procedures.
  • Assist surgeons during operations by handling instruments, maintaining a sterile field, and anticipating surgical needs.
  • Monitor patient status and communicate effectively with the surgical team to ensure patient safety.
  • Maintain strict adherence to infection control and safety protocols throughout all surgical activities.
  • Document surgical procedures and assist with post-operative care and cleanup.
