About The Position

Join our Labor and Delivery team at UPMC Western Maryland as a Licensed Practical Nurse! You will provide care and IV therapy following UPMC guidelines and State Board Regulations, working under the direction of a Registered Nurse or other licensed UPMC provider. This position requires working 36 hours per week, daylight hours with shift times being 7AM to 7:30PM, including rotating weekend and holiday shifts. Requirements

  • Graduation from a State Board of Nursing approved Licensed Practical Nursing Program.
  • 0-2 years of experience.
  • Completion of IV therapy curriculum within 4 months of hire/transfer.
  • Ability to take nurse assignments at the top of LPN license in med/surg/tele or Emergency Department settings.
  • Knowledge and skills to provide care and interact appropriately with patients of all ages.
  • Understanding of growth and development principles across the lifespan.
  • Ability to assess patient status and interpret age-specific needs.
  • Identify and implement process improvement opportunities for patient care.
  • Collaborate with health care team, patients, and families to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with all staff and patients/families.
  • Work effectively in a complex environment with multiple/changing priorities.
  • Mobility, visual manual dexterity, and physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.
  • Computer skills to utilize electronic health records.
  • LPN must maintain state licensure where they are practicing or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located.
  • If graduated prior to 2012, the LPN will need to provide official proof of completion of IV therapy approved program within 4 months of hire/transfer.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.

Responsibilities

  • Exercise sound nursing judgment based on your preparation, knowledge, and experience.
  • Participate in planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care using focused assessment.
  • Act within LPN Practice guidelines, including IVs, to create a healing environment.
  • Formulate daily goals and care plans for patients, considering their individual needs.
  • Communicate patient conditions to other care providers and ensure comprehensive documentation.
  • Provide patient and family education for effective care transitions.
  • Seek guidance from a licensed professional nurse when patient care needs exceed your scope of practice or ability.
  • Collaborate with the health care team to achieve desired patient outcomes.
  • Build compassionate relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Maintain productive working relationships and demonstrate accountability, enthusiasm, and commitment.
  • Understand cultural differences and promote healthy relationships.
  • Follow UPMC policies, guidelines, and the State Practice Act.
  • Support the orientation and development of new LPNs and patient care staff.
  • Continuously seek feedback and opportunities for professional improvement.
  • Participate in organizational programs and identify process improvement opportunities.
  • Improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction by incorporating professional and organizational goals.
  • Balance work and personal life, model safe work hours, and communicate safety hazards.
