About The Position

The University of Virginia's number one ranked Department of Student Health and Wellness (SHW) provides a comprehensive range of medical, mental health, well-being, and disability support services to all enrolled undergraduate and graduate students. The University of Virginia’s Medical Services, a unit within the Department of Student Health and Wellness, is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse. Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) are responsible for carrying outpatient care in accordance with licensed independent practitioner’s orders, under the guidance and direction of the registered nurse in charge. They administer ordered medications and treatments, observe and record effects of medications, and observe and report patient reactions to treatments or any unusual conditions. Work is largely routine and done according to established protocols, with some supervision. This is a full-time (40 hours/week), nonexempt level, benefited position. Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma with preference for at least one year of experience as an LPN.
  • Licensure: Valid License as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or ability to obtain certification within 30 days of hire.
  • The successful candidate will pass both a background check and a health and drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Administer nursing care to patients requiring care in an ambulatory setting based on nursing practice standards.
  • Assist with medical examinations, patient teaching, and home care.
  • Administer immunizations, oral, and injectable medications.
  • Measure and record patients' vital signs, such as height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration.
  • Document and report patient information clearly and concisely via electronic medical record.
  • Evaluate each patient's response to treatments and procedures.
  • Lead certified nursing assistants.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
