Position Summary: The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) plays an essential role in delivering safe, compassionate, and efficient nursing care to patients undergoing ophthalmic surgical procedures in a high-volume outpatient setting. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or physician, the LPN provides support throughout the preoperative, intraoperative, and post-anesthesia recovery phases in compliance with clinical standards, protocols, and scope of practice. The LPN collaborates closely with the surgical team and multidisciplinary staff, contributes to patient education, and assists with maintaining a sterile, patient-centered environment. In addition, the LPN may participate in training new clinical staff and supporting team-based care initiatives.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Active Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in the state of employment
  • Minimum of 1 year of clinical nursing experience
  • Familiarity with electronic health records and clinical documentation systems.
  • Current AHA Healthcare Provider training (BCLS)
  • Current BLS certification or obtain within 6 months of employment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to safe patient care practices.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in precepting or training new clinical staff is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Preoperative Assist with patient assessments and completion of pre-surgical checklists.
  • Prepare patients for surgery, including vital signs, skin prep, and comfort measures.
  • Support IV initiation and preoperative medication administration under RN supervision.
  • Provide education to patients and families regarding surgical process and expectations.
  • Intraoperative Assist in surgical preparation and positioning of patients.
  • Support the surgical team by ensuring proper instrumentation and sterile field setup, as needed.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and assist in monitoring patient responses.
  • Adhere to aseptic techniques and surgical protocols.
  • Post-Anesthesia Recovery Monitor vital signs and patient condition under RN or physician direction.
  • Provide basic post-operative care including comfort measures and assistance with mobility.
  • Report complications or patient concerns promptly to the RN or provider.
  • Reinforce discharge instructions and ensure patient understanding and readiness.
  • General Responsibilities Maintain accurate documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Collaborate effectively with RNs, surgeons, surgical technologists, and administrative staff.
  • Uphold infection prevention and patient safety protocols consistently.
  • Assist with supply inventory, room turnover, and maintenance of clinical areas.
  • Participate in training and orientation of new clinical staff, including LPNs and nursing assistants.
  • Maintain strict adherence to HIPAA regulations by safeguarding patient privacy and ensuring the confidentiality of all health information.
  • Special projects and other duties may be assigned as needed
