About the position

The Specialty Care service is hiring (1) Licensed Practical Nurse to join the Specialty Care team located within the Eastern Oklahoma VA Healthcare System. This position is permanent and full-time, with a work schedule from Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The role does not require travel and is not eligible for telework. The position is classified under the GS-7 pay scale, with a salary range of $64,531 to $83,895 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates understanding of age and population-specific characteristics that affect the health care needs of the Veteran.
  • Adheres to standards of practice and safe technique in preparation and administration of medication.
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of the effects and/or reactions caused by medications, treatments, and procedures.
  • Performs personal care, diagnostic support duties, and treatments according to procedure under the direction of the professional nurse.
  • Appropriately triages and prioritizes patient needs as routine, urgent, or emergent in the clinic setting.
  • Embodies the ICARE core values of the organization: Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence.
  • Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary team, communicating respectfully and professionally with patients and staff.
  • Establishes constructive relationships with patients, their families, and co-workers.
  • Independently performs electrocardiograms and places ambulatory electrocardiography devices.
  • Independently performs drain and/or suture removal, and surgical wound care.
  • Educates patients about their pre/post procedure instructions and provides information regarding health and self-care.
  • Plans and discusses each procedure with surgical professionals and assures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to procedures.
  • Ensures adherence to sterile techniques and other established safety measures.
  • Handles all specimens appropriately and ensures proper labeling and delivery to the lab.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
  • Must have full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination/evaluation.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required.
  • Must complete an online onboarding process and provide acceptable identification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Preferred experience in procedural nursing.
  • Experience in complex/specialized patient care.
