About The Position

Our urology team is looking for an experienced nurse! Full-time Opening: 40 hours/week Scheduled Shifts: Monday - Friday Scheduled Hours: primarily 8:00am - 4:30pm with 30-minute lunch break Location: designated days each week at RVA office locations (West End, Short Pump, Mechanicsville, and/or Midlothian) Summary: Provide professional nursing care for office patients following established standards and practices. The nurse demonstrates critical thinking skills, scientific judgment, and leadership in the anticipation and planning for the care of the patient.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • State of Virginia Licensed Practical Nurse
  • CPR certification
  • Previous urology specialty experience including cystoscopy and urethral dilation
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to give and evaluate patient care.
  • Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations, and procedures to administer patient care.
  • Knowledge of OSHA guidelines.
  • Knowledge of VWC's computer system software and its functionality as it pertains to patient care.
  • Knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to urology specialty.
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining electronic records, preparing reports, and responding to correspondence.
  • Skill in maintaining departmental quality assurance and quality control standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and memos.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, electronic, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to maintain strictest patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate with patient to ascertain needs (requires independent judgment for assessing patient needs for appropriate preparation for exam; suggesting solution to patient phoning with problems; providing guidance and information regarding medication provided by physician).
  • Ability to obtain vital signs and administer medication.
  • Ability to demonstrate accuracy and efficiency in recording information in patient charts, in labeling specimens, and in giving test results to patients.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to respond with flexibility to changing workload or patient assignments.
  • Ability to perform effectively as a team member, supporting a patient-focused environment in all interactions with co-workers, patients, families, visitors, and volunteers.
  • Ability to type 30 words per minute.

Responsibilities

  • Greets patients and prepares patients for and assists with examinations; instructs patients in collection of samples and tests.
  • Administers injections and medications, provides wound care and incision checks, interprets physician’s instructions to patients, assists with minor surgery, aids physician during treatments, examinations, and patient testing.
  • Performs voiding trials for patients.
  • Prepares equipment; cleans and sterilizes instruments and equipment per OSHA guidelines.
  • Conducts microscopic urinalysis evaluation using Clinitek Status.
  • Inserts Foley Catheters and SP tubes.
  • Evaluates urine cultures, proceeds with treatment based on established protocols. Sends results for review by a physician.
  • Enters/updates current medications into EMR.
  • Instructs the patient and/or family regarding medication, treatment instructions, or health care information as needed. Provide patient teaching regarding pessary use.
  • Refills patient prescriptions based on office protocols.
  • Notifies patients of test results as directed by the physician.
  • Arranges pre-op labs, and follow-up arrangements for further testing or treatment when necessary.
  • Calls post-op patients as required by the physician.
  • Maintains stock of supplies and medications.
  • Maintains logbook of cold sterilization process.
  • Oversees schedule of appointments and ensures preferences are given to patients in emergency situations. Maintains timely flow of patients.
  • Maintains and updates surveillance of test results in EMR system and Patient Safety report.
  • Attends required meetings.
  • Complies with Virginia Women's Center’s policies and procedures. Follows guidelines required by HIPAA, OSHA, and CLIA regulations. Maintains appropriate attendance and punctuality as defined by Virginia Women's Center.
