The staff Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), under the supervision of the Nurse Director or designee, is responsible for the nursing care of assigned patients, and to prescribe, delegate and coordinate the patient care administered by staff. Included in such responsibility is the goal of assisting patients to move as rapidly, uneventfully and safely through their hospitalization period. UMass-Harrington Hospital has a broad scope of behavioral health services, both inpatient and outpatient, including adult and pediatric mental health, addiction, partial hospital programs, and crisis services. The Outpatient Nursing division is involved in all aspects of treatment as part of a multidisciplinary team approach. The Interventional Psychiatry LPN provides direct clinical support for advanced psychiatric treatments, including Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), esketamine therapy, and long-acting injectable (LAI) medications. This role involves treatment administration, patient monitoring, education, documentation, and close collaboration with psychiatric providers to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate care.

Requirements

  • Graduation and training from an accredited school of nursing with current license by the Massachusetts B.O.R.N.
  • American Heart Association or equivalent B.L.S. certification for health care provider required upon hire or during orientation.
  • Active Massachusetts Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in good standing
  • Current BLS certification
  • Strong clinical assessment and patient monitoring skills
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and documentation abilities
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating within a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
  • Manual dexterity to operate medical equipment
  • Ability to lift or assist patients as needed

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of one year of general medical-surgical experience is preferred.
  • Experience in psychiatry, behavioral health, or interventional psychiatry
  • Prior experience with TMS, esketamine, or injectable medications (training may be provided)
  • Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR)
  • Comfort working in a fast-evolving, specialty mental health setting

Responsibilities

  • Uses Nursing process to assess and plan care.
  • Effectively performs Nursing tasks utilizing policy and procedure.
  • Functions effectively in all urgent and emergent situations.
  • Delegates effectively.
  • Coordinates exchange of information between staff, physicians and administration.
  • Manages the dynamics of changing flow and acuity of the unit.
  • Administer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatments according to established protocols and provider orders
  • Prepare, administer, and monitor patients receiving esketamine therapy in compliance with REMS requirements
  • Administer long-acting injectable psychiatric medications per provider orders and best practice standards
  • Ensure accurate treatment setup, dosing verification, and equipment operation
  • Monitor patients before, during, and after treatments for side effects, adverse reactions, and changes in mental or physical status
  • Obtain and document vital signs and required assessments per protocol
  • Respond appropriately to emergent situations and escalate concerns to providers as needed
  • Maintain a calm, supportive environment for patients undergoing interventional treatments
  • Educate patients on treatment procedures, expectations, side effects, and post-treatment instructions
  • Provide reassurance and therapeutic communication to reduce anxiety and promote adherence
  • Serve as a point of contact for patient questions related to treatments
  • Accurately document treatments, assessments, patient responses, and communications in the electronic health record
  • Maintain compliance with clinic policies, state nursing regulations, and federal requirements (including REMS for esketamine)
  • Assist with treatment logs, audits, and quality assurance activities
  • Work closely with psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and clinical staff to coordinate care
  • Assist with scheduling, treatment flow, and maintaining efficient clinic operations
  • Participate in staff meetings, training, and continuing education related to interventional psychiatry
