The position involves administering nursing care to designated patients under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse. The role includes performing a variety of direct and indirect patient care duties utilizing the nursing process. The nurse will participate in quality improvement initiatives and promote good public relations for the nursing department and hospital. Responsibilities also include implementing, transcribing, and/or countersigning physician’s orders, competently administering medications with knowledge of their action, mode of administration, side effects, and contraindications. Additionally, the nurse will assist physicians with diagnostic tests and procedures, as well as with admitting, discharging, and transferring patients. The position requires knowledge and skill to function effectively as a team leader, providing leadership by working cooperatively with ancillary departments and other patient care team members. Competency in performing core and unit-specific clinical skills is essential, along with the ability to communicate clinical data to physicians or nurse practitioners to facilitate sound clinical decisions. The nurse will utilize nursing assessment skills to participate in planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care, and will also engage in identifying the biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care, discharge planning, spiritual, and educational needs of patients, families, and/or significant others. Participation in patient and family teaching is also a key responsibility, along with calling in medications to the pharmacist at the patient-requested pharmacy and assisting in compiling and filing information in patient charts.
