Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Emergency Department

About the position

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Emergency Department (ED) provides patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician. Responsibilities include taking and recording vital signs, applying bandages and dressings, dispensing medications, and observing patients for adverse reactions to treatments. The LPN may assist patients with activities of daily living and is involved in the development and implementation of patient care plans.

Responsibilities

• Participates in the development, interpretation, implementation, evaluation and documentation of the plan of care for each patient using the nursing process.
• Provides skilled and safe nursing care to assigned patients under the leadership of an RN.
• Recognizes and refers complex problems to RN and follows through on predictable problems.
• Incorporates knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
• Ensures the physician orders are implemented promptly and accurately.
• Documents therapies and patient responses according to division/unit standards.
• Participates in patient care conferences and discharge planning.
• Participates in patient education activities involving the patient and/or significant others.
• Performs appropriately in emergency situations.
• Provides a clean, safe and therapeutic environment in all areas of the unit.
• Operates all equipment on the unit and reports unsafe or damaged equipment.
• Checks crash cart and completes other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Current Maryland license in good standing as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
• Basic Life Support - Health Care Provider (BLS-HCP) certification.
• 1 year of applicable experience.
• Basic knowledge and working experience with Medical Terminology.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

• Bilingual in Spanish.
