About The Position

This position centers on ensuring commercial/manufacturing facilities maintain optimal climate control through expert maintenance and repair of complex HVAC systems. The role encompasses preventive maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues, and optimizing system performance to maximize energy efficiency and occupant comfort. The technician works with sophisticated equipment including chillers, boilers, air handlers, and building automation systems while maintaining detailed service records. This critical facilities role requires technical mastery, analytical problem-solving skills, and the ability to respond effectively to both routine maintenance needs and urgent system failures.

Requirements

  • Applicant must be a member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local 250 in good standing
  • Valid HVAC technician certification and EPA Universal refrigerant certification
  • Journeyman status through union (3-5 years of experience for journeyman level; additional experience required for master level)
  • NATE certification or other California state-specific credentials (where applicable)
  • 3-5 years of commercial HVAC maintenance experience (minimum for journeyman level)
  • Understanding of refrigeration cycles, air distribution, and hydronic systems
  • Proficiency with HVAC diagnostic tools and testing equipment
  • Working knowledge of electrical systems and motor controls
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and equipment specifications
  • Physical capability to lift 50 pounds and work from ladders or in confined spaces, including extended periods of standing, kneeling, or overhead work; tolerance for working in extreme temperatures (especially relevant for HVAC environments), confined spaces, and at heights
  • Ability to pass extensive background check and obtain required security clearances for facility access
  • Compliance with prevailing wage requirements where applicable

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with building automation systems such as Johnson Controls or Siemens
  • Additional certifications such as OSHA 30 or boiler operator license
  • Background with central plant equipment including large chillers and boilers
  • Familiarity with energy management and commissioning processes
  • Experience using CMMS software for maintenance tracking
  • Knowledge of ASHRAE standards and commercial HVAC best practices

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance on chillers, boilers, air handlers, rooftop units, and related HVAC equipment
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical components to restore proper system operation
  • Monitor system performance and adjust controls to maintain temperature and environmental conditions
  • Respond to emergency HVAC failures and comfort complaints to minimize operational disruption
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, equipment service histories, and work order documentation
  • Conduct equipment inspections to identify potential issues before they impact building operations
  • Coordinate with vendors and contractors for specialized repairs and equipment replacements
  • Test and balance air systems and optimize configurations to improve energy efficiency
