About The Position

The Undiagnosed Disease Program (UDP) at CHOP is currently recruiting a full time ABGC/ABMG Board Certified Genetic Counselor III to join this exciting program with a growing multidisciplinary team. Prior experience in a multidisciplinary clinic, translational research program, and/or managing small teams or research results is an asset. The Undiagnosed Disease Program is a clinical and translational research bridge program focused on offering personalized care and cutting-edge diagnostics for families who are struggling to pinpoint the cause of their child’s condition. The program is part of CHOP Omics Initiative and harnesses the knowledge of clinical and research experts from across CHOP plus the power of comprehensive genetic analysis and other advanced diagnostic tools to improve diagnosis and treatment of undiagnosed diseases. This position may include involvement in other Omics Initiative efforts. The GC III partner with the Medical Director to guide and implement the operational, clinical and research goals of the UDP. GC III will lead the core clinical team that includes a GC I and a nurse navigator and will work collaboratively with consulting clinicians and the research team within the UDP. GC III will participate in evaluation and genetic counseling of patients undergoing complex genomic testing in an outpatient multidisciplinary clinical setting, with the focus on advanced multi-omics diagnostics. There will be opportunities to participate in ongoing research efforts, teaching and student supervision, development of website materials, and more. Clinical or research-based genetic counselor with demonstrated advanced-level genetic counseling expertise and/or recognized as a point-of-contact for a specialized patient population or clinical program, along with providing efforts consistent to the mission of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Additionally, this position involves an enhanced level of participation and responsibilities within, but not exclusive of, at least one the following: - Administration, - Education and/or Scholarly Pursuits, - Research, - Clinical care or outreach. This position includes active participation within the Section of Genetic Counseling. If acceptable by clinical leadership within the GCs Division, this role is able to engage in Incident-to Follow Up Genetic counseling visits for established patients to the practice to assist with returning test results, updating medical and family histories, reviewing testing options, and evaluating familial recurrence risks.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree Genetic Counseling or Human Genetics - Required
  • At least five (5) years as an independent genetic counselor - Required
  • Demonstrated ability in counseling, skills, techniques and other related areas.
  • Subject to pressure related to emergency clinical problems.
  • Must have a high degree of flexibility of skills and hours.
  • Certified Genetics Counselor - American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC) - upon hire - Required
  • Licensed Genetics Counselor - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - within 3 months - Required

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with clinical data or research data is preferred.
  • Licensed Genetics Counselor - New Jersey State Licensing Board - - Preferred
  • Prior experience in a multidisciplinary clinic, translational research program, and/or managing small teams or research results is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Recognized as a point-of-contact for a specialized patient population
  • Reviews patient information, evaluates family history, conducts risk assessment, and recommends medical or genetic testing based on analysis.
  • Provides crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling as necessary.
  • Works directly with the Attending Physician assigned to the patient population.
  • Sought out to provide outreach and education
  • May assist with education/ mentorship within the Division, along with providing clinical education and mentorship to Genetic Counseling graduate students
  • Present cases at rounds, or other conferences
  • Involvement with research activity related to their specialized patient population based on the specific job description.
  • Published on posters/ abstracts/ publications
  • Follows IRB protocols and guidelines as per specific approved protocol.
  • Works directly with the Principal Investigator for the specific research protocol.
