About The Position

Act as a customs broker (a licensed intermediary between private business and government agencies (such as US Customs and Border Protection) to facilitate the legal movement of goods into the USA). Provide current knowledge and compliance of Customs and all other affected government agency regulations and requirements to internal departments and clients; facilitate communications and correspondence between Customs, the company, and clients; develop and maintain current Company procedures to ensure complete Customs regulations compliance at all levels; ensure that services and procedures for those services to be provided to the client by the Company as well as all other processes required by Customs and all other affected government agencies are well defined and provided in a professional manner at all times; facilitate resolution of problems or concerns with respect to any services provided by the Company as well as related procedures.

Requirements

  • Licensing: Must be a licensed customs broker and maintain an active customs broker license to practice as a licensed broker.
  • Continuing Ed.: Must complete any and all continuing education credits, as needed, in order to keep the license current.
  • Eligibility (U.S.): Must be at least 21 years old, a U.S. citizen, and not a federal employee.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years related experience.
  • Technical Proficiency: Mastery of customs entry software like ACE (Automated Commercial Environment), trade management systems (e.g., SAP GTS), and EDI systems.
  • Attention to Detail: Critical for avoiding misclassifications that lead to heavy fines, which can start at $10,000 per violation.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving: Necessary for navigating sudden regulatory changes and resolving shipment discrepancies.
  • Communication: Ability to explain technical legal requirements to clients and negotiate with customs authorities.
  • Must be able to work in an office environment.
  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 10 pounds
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, and reach
  • Position requires repetitive motion, hearing, talking, grasping and sitting
  • Have close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading

Nice To Haves

  • Education: Prefer (but not essential) an associate or bachelor's degree and ideally in international business, logistics, or supply chain management.
  • Experience: 5+ years of experience desired.

Responsibilities

  • Documentation Management: Preparing, filing and submitting critical documentation, including commercial invoices, certificates of origin, bills of lading, permits, and import/export declarations.
  • Monitoring: Track/monitor the status of clients’ shipments.
  • Classification & Valuation: Determining the correct Harmonized System (HS) codes for goods to ensure they are classified accurately for tax purposes.
  • Payment Processing: Calculating and proper valuation and paying required duties, taxes, and federal fees on behalf of clients.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring all shipments meet complex and evolving international trade laws, including safety, environmental, and health standards.
  • Liaison Duties: Acting as the primary point of contact between importers/exporters, freight forwarders, and government officials to resolve clearance issues or delays.
  • Client Advisory: Guiding businesses on trade agreements, duty exemptions, and strategies to minimize costs and legal risks.
  • Complete other related duties as needed.
