About The Position

This is a 100% full-time appointment for a Licensed Clinical Psychologist specializing in pediatric-onset and congenital heart disease. The primary appointment is in the Section of Cardiology with a secondary appointment in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. The role involves providing evidence-based consultation, assessment, and individual/family intervention for patients followed by the Heart Institute, consulting with medical teams in outpatient and inpatient settings, conducting pre-surgical psychology evaluations, and participating in post-surgical follow-up. The psychologist will also be involved in group interventions, family meetings, and contributing to existing clinical and research programs for cardiology populations. Additionally, the position includes participating in formal training programs for psychological externs, interns, and post-doctoral fellows, and maintaining a commitment to providing care for diverse individuals across the continuity of cardiology care at Children’s Hospital Colorado Anschutz medical campus and its network of care and outreach sites. The Heart Institute is recognized as the largest pediatric heart program in the region, performing over 700 heart surgeries and approximately 1,000 heart catheterizations annually since 2020, significantly exceeding the high-volume center requirement of 250 heart surgeries per year. The institute boasts over 100 faculty members and continues to expand.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or Psy.D. in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA accredited program with an APA or APPIC approved internship.
  • Completion or anticipated completion of a psychology postdoctoral fellowship.
  • Applicants must possess a Colorado Psychologist License or be eligible for licensure within the state of Colorado.
  • For Assistant Professor: 1-3 years of related clinical experience at rank or equivalent experience.
  • For Associate Professor: 4-7 years of related clinical experience at rank or equivalent experience.
  • Must have prior experience in a pediatric health psychology setting.
  • Must successfully pass a drug test through Children’s Hospital Colorado.
  • Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal background check.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the use of evidence-based health and behavior assessment and intervention with children and adolescents in pediatric specialty care clinics.
  • Ability to work across multiple subspecialties to coordinate care for patients.
  • Strong interpersonal, administrative, and communication skills, both orally and written.

Nice To Haves

  • Clinical and/or research experience with pediatric cardiology populations.
  • Experience in pediatric psychology teaching, program development, and research.
  • Experience and skill in multidisciplinary consulting with professional colleagues and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Evidence-based consultation, assessment, and individual/family intervention for patients followed by the Heart Institute.
  • Consultation with medical team in outpatient cardiology clinic and inpatient cardiac intensive care and progressive care units.
  • Pre-surgical psychology evaluations and post-surgical follow-up.

  • Family meetings with care team and medical team care conferences.
  • Developing, enhancing, and contributing to existing clinical and research programs for cardiology populations.
  • Participating in formal training programs for psychological externs, interns, and post-doctoral fellows.
  • Maintaining an active commitment to providing care for individuals from diverse backgrounds and following families across the continuity of cardiology care at Children’s Hospital Colorado Anschutz medical campus and its network of care and outreach sites.
