Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Department: Special Education Bargaining Unit: Union of Grand Rapids Education Support Professional (UGRESP) Wage: Determined by the collective bargaining agreement Direct Supervisor: Director of Health Services JOB SUMMARY Reporting to the Director of Health Services, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) works under the day-to-day supervision of the building Registered Nurse (RN), in collaboration with other members of the healthcare and educational team to provide appropriate healthcare services to each scholar under the direct supervision of the registered nurse and the building principal. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Essential functions under the Americans with Disabilities Act may include any of the following duties, knowledge, and skills. Regular on time and in person attendance is an essential function of this job. Other essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following: Provides medications and treatments to identified scholars under the supervision by the RN, and according to the districts policies, procedures and guidelines. Applies knowledge of common medications and treatments to evaluate the side effects and effectiveness of services provided. Collects and documents data regarding the child’s health status, (such as immunizations and nursing care) consistent with documentation guidelines. Provides written reports as required. Communicates with the registered nurse essential information regarding treatments provided and observations of the child’s response. Follows written health care plans. Administers first aid and care to children who are ill or injured according to district protocols and under the direction of the RN. Communicates information from the child, family, physicians and other members of the health care/educational team to the registered nurse in order to facilitate coordination of services. Arranges and manages the physical setting of the health office: May be required to attend general staff meetings as requested by the principal. May be required to attend monthly nursing meetings and in-services. May be required to accompany children that have medical needs during Maintains knowledge of current trends and development in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related conferences, in-services, etc. Responsible for carrying out educational activities as requested by the principal. Interact with co-workers, administration, scholars, parents and the community in positive, supportive and cooperative ways. Provides input into the development of the LPN role. Responsible for good attendance and punctuality and following call-in procedures to assure a safe and healthy environment for scholars. Consistently demonstrate dependable attendance and punctuality. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Active Michigan LPN license.
  • Current CPR and First aid certification.
  • Must have: Completed at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education; or Obtained an associate’s or higher degree.
  • Demonstrated experience with medically fragile patients (i.e. diabetes, seizures, tracheostomy, etc.).
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and punctuality.
  • Demonstrated good communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with parents, the public and staff members in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with confidential information.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate as a member of the team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse environment.
  • Demonstrated basic computer skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience with medically fragile children.
