About The Position

The License Pending Registered Nurse in the Operating Room is responsible for delivering patient care under the supervision of a licensed registered nurse while awaiting licensure. This role supports the surgical team by providing pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care to patients. The License Pending RN will work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure a safe and efficient operating room environment.

Requirements

  • Completion of New Grad Transition to Practice Program
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • CPR
  • Official written notification of completion and pass of the NCLEX-RN exam.
  • Proof of submission of the required licensure fee.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • New Graduate RNs starting on or after 1/1/25 must earn Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) within 3 years of start date.
  • The privilege to practice as a license-pending registered nurse will be aligned with the Illinois Nurse Practice Act and shall be terminated with the occurrence of any of the following: Three months have passed since the official date of passing the licensure exam as inscribed on the formal written notification indicating passage of the exam. The 3-month license pending period may be extended if more time is needed by the Department to process the licensure application.
  • Receipt of the registered professional nurse license from the Department.
  • Notification from the Department that the application for licensure has been refused.
  • A request by the Department that the individual terminate practicing as a license-pending registered nurse until an official decision is made by the Department to grant or deny a registered professional nurse license.

Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of a Licensed Registered Nurse,
  • Patient Assessment and Care Planning: Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients' physical, emotional, and psychological needs. Develop and implement individualized care plans in collaboration with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
  • Treatment Administration: Administer medications, treatments, and procedures as ordered by the provider. Monitor patient responses to treatments and adjust care plans as necessary to ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Surgical Preparation and Assistance: Assist the surgical team in preparing the operating room and patients for procedures, including pre-operative care, patient assessment, and verification of surgical site. Participate in patient positioning, draping, and ensuring sterility of the surgical environment.
  • Intra-Operative Monitoring: Monitor the patients vital signs and respond appropriately during surgery under supervision. Assist with post-operative care and transfer of patients to the recovery area.
  • Patient Monitoring and Documentation: Continuously monitor patients' vital signs, physical condition, and response to interventions. Document all observations, medications, treatments, and procedural details accurately and promptly in electronic medical records (EMR).
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of patient assessments, interventions, medications, treatments, and outcomes. Ensure compliance with all regulatory and hospital documentation standards.
  • Coordination of Care: Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care and manage treatment plans effectively. Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and contribute to discharge planning.
  • Patient Education: Educate patients and their families about medical conditions, treatment options, and post-discharge care. Provide support and resources to help patients manage their health and recovery.
  • Patient Experience: Engage with patients and families in a manner that promotes comfort, trust, and understanding. Address concerns with empathy and professionalism to create a positive, supportive environment that fosters well-being.
  • Employee Experience: Contribute to a positive, collaborative work environment. Offer feedback and assistance to peers, and engage in open communication to promote mutual respect and teamwork.
  • Emergency Response: Respond quickly and effectively to medical emergencies, including performing life-saving procedures and stabilizing patients as needed.
  • Infection Control: Adhere to infection control protocols, ensuring a clean and safe environment. Implement standard precautions and safety measures to prevent the spread of infections.
  • Flexibility: Demonstrate flexibility with assignments within the professional scope of duties and licensure.
  • Assist with restocking operating room supplies and instruments.
  • Participate in hospital committees and improvement projects as needed.
  • Attend staff meetings and in-service education sessions.
