About The Position

Supervises and coordinates library operations, including circulation, interlibrary loan, and technical services, while ensuring high-quality customer service and efficient workflow. Provides leadership to library staff, supports administrative and financial functions, and assists the Director of Library with planning, policy implementation, and overall library management. Serves as Acting Director in the Director's absence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in library science, public administration or related field
  • Two (2) years working experience in a library and at least to six (6) years of total experience in positions of increasing responsibilities
  • Must have valid Texas driver's license or be able to obtain one by date of hire.
  • Knowledge of computers
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and practices
  • Knowledge of library practices, procedures and information sources
  • Skills to use modern office and audiovisual equipment including, but not limited to computer, scanner, digital projector, and, copier.
  • Ability to understand the organization of library materials including use of the Dewey Decimal System
  • Ability to deal with patrons from a wide variety of ethnic, social and economic backgrounds, including managing encounters with irate or upset individuals
  • Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints
  • Ability to make effective presentations or write reports describing library activities to top management, public groups, and/or elected officials.
  • Ability to effectively meet and deal with the public
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to handle stressful situations
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, trains, schedules, and evaluates library staff and volunteers
  • Performs administrative duties including purchasing, invoices, and accounts payable
  • Coordinates interlibrary loan activities, including submitting requests, processing materials, and maintaining relationships with partner libraries.
  • Promotes library services and resources by educating patrons on available materials, databases, and technology.
  • Provides direct customer service by assisting patrons with library materials, technology, accounts, and research inquiries; resolves complex or escalated complaints.
  • Assists in planning and implementing library programs, services, and community outreach initiatives.
  • Maintains knowledge of library systems, including cataloging, circulation software, and online resources; provides basic troubleshooting and staff training.
  • Assumes responsibility for routine work performed in all areas of the library in the Director's absence. These areas include administration, acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, reference, and periodicals.
  • Ability to perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Regular and timely attendance is an essential job function.
