About the position

The Library Specialist I at Texas A&M University is responsible for providing essential front desk services and assisting patrons at the Annex and Evans Library Service Desks. This role involves responding to security and fire alarms, managing building crises, and ensuring a welcoming environment for library users. The position requires flexibility in scheduling and the ability to navigate various library spaces effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Provides basic and general front desk services coverage for both the Annex and Evans Library Service Desks during assigned hours.
  • Assists patrons in accessing library resources and uses the library computer system to charge/discharge materials.
  • Demonstrates basic conflict resolution skills with users and assists student workers in confrontational situations.
  • Monitors the public environment and responds to disruptions, reporting facility and technology issues as needed.
  • Opens and checks public areas for access by users and follows up on outstanding facility issues.
  • Performs study area sweeps for compliance with food/drink/noise guidelines and supports an inclusive environment.
  • Provides desk coverage to other Library service points across campus as needed.
  • Responds to security and fire alarms, facilitates safe evacuation, and performs post-event checks.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year of related library, office, or customer service experience.
  • Knowledge of email, word processing, spreadsheet applications, and internet search engines.
  • Good interpersonal skills and reliable attendance.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to handle material which can contain dust or microscopic mold spores.
  • Ability to move medium weight boxes, books, and heavy book trucks.
