About The Position

The City of Kodiak is recruiting for a full-time Library Specialist in the Kodiak Public Library Department. The Department is looking for an experienced team player who has the desire to be part of a progressive community library working hard to serve the needs of our community. Under general supervision, this position is responsible for performing a variety of technical, para-professional, and some professional librarian services in accordance with assigned area that could include: developing, planning, administering, and leading educational activities; providing assistance to patrons in locating educational, professional and recreational material; assisting with the development of operating policies and procedures for assigned Library section; evaluating and selecting materials; preparing bibliographies, booklists, and program guides; and providing work guidance to Library staff. The Library Department provides a variety of services and programs to support and enrich the lives of the residents of Kodiak. The Library Specialist is responsible for efficient delivery of a variety of programs for youth and adults in the Kodiak community and may be assigned specific program area(s), including, but not limited to the following: Access Services, Collection Services, and Youth Services. The Library Specialist must perform these duties in a manner that reflects positively on the City and the Department.

Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED).
  • Bachelor's degree in liberal arts, education, public administration, or a related field.
  • Two to three years of library experience or teaching experience.
  • Demonstrate basic proficiency in library technology.
  • Proficient in customer service skills and library procedures.
  • Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, prioritizes, assigns, leads reviews and participates in the work of the library as an integral team member, with the ability to work independently.
  • Trains staff and volunteers on specialized work methods and procedures.
  • Performs library circulation desk duties, including circulation materials and updating patron records.
  • Assists patrons by providing solutions to informational requests and evaluating resources in order to match information needs with reference and/or advisory materials.
  • Processes interlibrary loan requests in order to meet the needs of patrons.
  • Participates in collection maintenance activities, which includes selecting new materials for the library collections, including books, DVDs, CDs, periodicals and digital resources.
  • Evaluates, removes, and replaces items following established guidelines.
  • Analyzes current collection and removes worn, outdated, and unused materials.
  • Sorts and organizes donated materials.
  • Creates, prepares and distributes promotional material to publicize library programs.
  • Promotes library programs and services through the use of library website, print resources, and social media.
  • Facilitates and promotes programming related to educational programs sponsored by the library.
  • Maintains the library collections, ensuring they are diverse, current, relevant and meet the needs of the community.
  • Plans, prepares, coordinates, and presents innovative programs, including story time and other early literacy programs, STEM programs, and a variety of other programs that respond to community interests and needs.
  • Partners with community organizations and maintains relationships that further community and library goals.
  • Collaborates with non-profits, businesses, and schools to develop, promote and facilitate innovative, engaging programs at the library.
  • Helps plan, prepare, and coordinate the summer reading program.
  • Promotes and encourages library patronage by using the media, including press releases, audio public service announcements, radio reports, social media, and print media.
  • Maintains, compiles, and submits a variety of routine reports related to library activities.
  • Reviews and recommends changes and/or modifications to the library's operating policies and procedures to the Director.
  • Participates in the implementation of approved policies and procedures; monitors work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
