About The Position

The Library Security Assistant for the Indianapolis Public Library is to perform both customer service and security responsibilities. Check entire building and secure points of entry, exits and interior areas during the day and at opening/closing. Ensure patron and staff compliance with general safety/security rules and regulations and adherence to the Behavioral Policy set forth by IndyPL. Manage and report accidents and incidents that occur on library property. This position functions as part of a department or branch public services team to provide high quality and equitable internal and external customer service. When not directly addressing patron behavior issues, this position is expected to provide general customer service to patrons and perform general library clerical duties.

Requirements

  • Have four years of high school or equivalency
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Able to work the normally scheduled work time for this position
  • Able to cope with daily job-related stress and challenges.
  • Ability to perform security needs
  • Ability of lift 20 to 50 lbs.
  • Knowledge of office practices and procedures, including skills in operating a computer, workplace technology including email, internet and automated software, while working with attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of safety hazards and how to manage them.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize.

Nice To Haves

  • Post-secondary education preferred
  • Previous security experience preferred
  • Bilingual (preferred but not required).

Responsibilities

  • De-escalate, while ensuring patron compliance with security rules and regulations.
  • Document and resolve conflicts.
  • Work in an environment with constant public contact with people from all backgrounds, age groups, and abilities.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity in working with patrons, staff members and the community.
  • Creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.
  • Respond to emergencies and incidents promptly and according to policy.
  • Inspect and patrol premises regularly.
  • Provide high quality and equitable customer service, developing professional relationships with patrons and the community.
  • Enforce the library’s Behavior Policy and determine when behavior in the library is inappropriate with Manager or Person-In-Charge.
