About The Position

Depending on assignment: Performs complex library activities on a regular basis (e.g., copy cataloging, bibliographic searching, etc.) requiring extensive knowledge of machine readable formats, database searching strategies, and acceptable catalog copy; assists library patrons in locating information, requiring knowledge of basic reference sources; and/or supervises Senior Library Assistants or Library Assistants, engaged in routine library activities. Reports to Senior Library Associate or other designated supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent plus 12 to 18 months of formal course work or training in library science or related field (or equivalent training or experience which provides comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities).
  • A minimum of one year of experience in a library of comparable size and type.
  • AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, second edition) rules and MARC (machine readable cataloging) formats
  • Acceptable catalog copy
  • Reference sources
  • Library practices and procedures
  • Operation of online library systems
  • Interpersonal communication to effectively interact with University personnel and public in person and over the telephone (e.g., to assist patrons and faculty in locating material, to transmit work directives)

  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Recognize foreign languages, if required by position

Responsibilities

  • Develops search strategies and performs bibliographic searches (e.g., checks local and international sources to verify cataloging form, availability, etc.); retrieves and transfers (i.e., downloads) bibliographic records from international to local database.
  • Performs copy cataloging; inputs and revises bibliographic and holdings records to international and local database; revises catalog copy; inputs original catalog data, provided by Cataloging Department, into international database.
  • Assists library patrons in locating information by searching basic reference sources (e.g., encyclopedias, dictionaries, or almanacs) and information contained in online and card catalogs.
  • Searches online sources to verify and locate materials working from internal or external interlibrary loan requests; may contact patrons to verify requests and clarify information.
  • Compiles statistics and reports as requested; resolves problems; orders supplies needed for daily operation of unit.
  • Responds to inquiries concerning status of requests (e.g., interlibrary loan, document delivery, reserves, etc.).
  • Maintains commercial and in-house collection preservation operations.
  • May supervise Senior Library Assistants, Library Assistants and other classified, student, or temporary employees engaged in routine library activities; has authority and responsibility to exercise independent judgment in: - Planning and directing the work activities of employees; assigning and monitoring work duties and responsibilities; establishing and modifying work methods, schedules, and priorities.
  • - Interviewing job applicants and conducting performance evaluations of classified employees.
  • - Recommending formal personnel actions (e.g., hiring, termination, promotion, discipline, layoff/recall) for assigned employees and initiating appropriate action to implement recommendations.
  • - Communicating and enforcing policies and procedures; resolving problems; addressing employee concerns and complaints and adjusting grievances.
  • - Ensuring appropriate training of staff; identifying training needs; developing and implementing training activities.
  • Performs related duties as required.
