About The Position

The Library Associate at the Gladys Marcus Library, Fashion Institute of Technology, is responsible for assisting the Head of Special Collections and FIT Archive in managing operations related to archival and manuscript collections. This role involves providing expert collection processing, public service, and research assistance while ensuring compliance with security best practices. The Library Associate will also engage in administrative tasks, cross-unit responsibilities, and supervisory duties, contributing to the overall mission of the library.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science, Archives, Records Management, or Digital Humanities.
  • 2-4 years of relevant business experience.
  • Knowledge of library, archival, and preservation procedures.
  • Familiarity with collection management systems like ArchivesSpace and CollectiveAccess.
  • Knowledge of digital imaging, scanning, and metadata applications.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree in Information Science with a specialization in Archives and Records Management.
  • Subject specialty knowledge in Fashion, Costume, or Textiles design and/or history.
  • Experience with Springshare Library platform or similar.

Responsibilities

  • Arrange, process, and describe archival and manuscript collections in physical and digital formats.
  • Use collection management systems to create complex finding aids.
  • Handle fragile collections and apply preservation techniques and digitization protocols.
  • Maintain the Special Collections Reading Room and ensure a secure environment.
  • Provide researcher and reference services to patrons.
  • Conduct training and information sessions for various groups.
  • Assist patrons with library catalogs and respond to inquiries.
  • Maintain statistical usage data for reports and policy updates.
  • Participate in library-wide initiatives and serve on committees.
  • Assist with training and supervision of student aides and interns.
