About The Position

Under the general direction and oversight of the Library Director, performs professional and administrative duties in planning, implementing, directing, and evaluating library services for New Mexico Highlands University. Thomas C. Donnelly Library’s purpose is to make available to the students, faculty, staff and community members information resources for their curricular, research, and general information needs. He/she will assist in the integration of library services with programs of the University. In addition, the Associate Director will plan for the continued development of the Library, establish internal library policies and procedures, and work on statewide library projects. Assume authority, responsibility and accountability in all areas of the Library when the Director is absent.

Requirements

  • Required – MLS or MLIS degree from an American Library Association accredited university.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible leadership and supervision in an academic library environment
  • Demonstrated understanding of emerging technology, standards and practices for learning sciences, information resource and discovery in the digital age, including changes in information technology and scholarly communication.
  • Play a key role in long and short range planning for the library and is responsible for developing, implementing and marketing library services.
  • Strong administration skills, motivating and organizing staff, thorough understanding of electronic information services and resources, and demonstrated experience with public services operations.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to working in a team environment as well as commitment to diversity, continuous improvement, and the university philosophy.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director in the continuous integration of the library program with programs of the University.
  • Plan for the continued development of the library’s collections, and the establishing of internal library policies and procedures.
  • Work on statewide library initiatives.
  • Review programs and operations to identify and analyze problem areas.
  • Determine and institute work measurement and work simplification studies.
  • Assists with implementation of library strategic plan, goals and vision.
  • Oversee that the library’s goals and objectives are being carried out.
  • Plan, design, and develop mechanized systems for library operations or procedures.
  • In coordination with the library director, supervises division heads and provides input into hiring, training, and assists with annual employee evaluations.
  • Plan and implement staff development programs, coordinate vacation schedules.
  • Assist in planning and justifying library budget.
  • Assume authority, responsibility and accountability in all areas of the Library when the Director is absent.
  • Participate in the administrative decision making process of the Library Administrative Council.
  • Represent the Library in administrative and professional conferences, workshops, and meetings that are necessary for knowledge and professional growth.
  • Coordinate with the Office Coordinator, in contacting the Facilities administration, on the day-to-day up-keep of the library building.
  • Teach the 1-credit hour Library Research Course and provide instruction to individual classes as needed.
  • Serves on college and campus committees.
  • With input from the Library Director, compiles and maintains statistical information related to services and usage statistics for completion of surveys and annual reports, such as ACRL and IPEDS, and for use in improving library services.
  • Conducts special projects as requested by Library Director.
  • Perform any other library-related activity as instructed by the Director.
