The Library Assistant is responsible for the physical processing of a variety of library materials to include but not limited to books, CDs, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, etc. This role involves scanning materials, generating book and spine labels, preparing processed books for distribution to appropriate libraries, and providing daily relief coverage at the circulation desk. Additional related duties may be assigned as needed.

  • Unload and alphabetize materials, applying 3-M security tapes into book spines for protection.
  • Affix barcode labels on books, stamp each book in appropriate locations, and insert prepared title work slips.
  • Shelve books to be cataloged by call numbers, fiction, paperback collection, and Hawaiian collection.
  • Scan materials and generate book and spine labels for the Elementary Library.
  • Affix computer-generated labels for all campus libraries and prepare book jackets for books.
  • Affix book pockets or date due slips to the inside front cover of each book.
  • Prepare processed books for distribution to appropriate libraries and coordinate pick-up and delivery.
  • Load processed books onto book trucks for the Head Librarian at the Reference Desk.
  • Provide daily relief coverage at the circulation desk, performing all check-in and check-out procedures.
  • Assist users in obtaining requested library services.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in Library Services.
  • Good working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software applications.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple functions and priorities efficiently.
  • Excellent oral and writing skills to communicate clearly with students, parents, and staff.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to establish relationships with students, parents, and staff.
  • Ability to provide assistance in selecting appropriate library materials.
  • Ability to work with different age groups.
  • Ability to instruct students in the use of computer software/peripherals.
  • Knowledge of computerized library management systems, library terminology, and routines.
  • Familiarity with literature and enjoyment of reading and books.
