About The Position

The Library Assistant (Youth Services Specialist) plays a vital role in promoting literacy and library services to children and their caregivers. This position involves assisting patrons in selecting resources, organizing and presenting programs, and providing support at the circulation desk. The Library Assistant will also help patrons with technology and library resources, ensuring a welcoming and educational environment for youth.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree with previous library experience or equivalent training and experience.
  • Valid NC or SC driver's license required.
  • Familiarity with current authors, bestselling titles, and classics preferred.

  • Experience with integrated library systems.

Responsibilities

  • Assist children and caregivers in selecting library resources.
  • Promote interest in reading and libraries among preschool and school-age children.
  • Organize and present Storytime and other age-appropriate programs.
  • Work at the circulation desk, checking materials in and out, making copies, and recording fines.
  • Shelve and straighten materials, conduct shelf-reads, and process new materials.
  • Locate materials and information in person, by phone, and online.
  • Assist patrons with computers, eBooks, and the library catalog.
  • Teach patrons to use the library's online resources.
  • Float to all library branch locations as needed and may drive the library van on occasion.
  • Support other county departments during emergency situations.
