About The Position

The City of Falls Church is recruiting for a permanent part-time (30 hours per week) Library Assistant I position. This role requires weekday and weekend shifts and at least one evening per week. The Library Assistant will support the Mary Riley Styles Public Library's Mission, Vision, and Values, by fostering a welcoming environment and promoting flexible, forward-thinking service. The position will focus on directly serving the community and ensuring that members feel welcomed and informed about library resources. This announcement may also be used to fill other part-time Library Assistant I vacancies at MRSPL, offering 20 to 30 hours per week. Requirements

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Windows software operating systems
  • Graduation from high school plus college level course work

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in public libraries preferred
  • Preferred general knowledge of basic library procedures, methods and techniques
  • Preferred experience working with an Integrated Library System such as Apollo, Sierra, Millennium, SirsiDynax
  • Experience working in a team environment

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct service to the public on both library service desks (front information desk and youth services desk)
  • Assist patrons in selection and location of materials
  • Perform essential departmental job responsibilities including checking in returned library materials, pulling reserved items, processing new patron library cards, updating patron accounts, registering customers for programs, and reserving and accessing meeting and study rooms
  • Provide reader’s advisory to children, teens, and adults
  • Troubleshoot and help patrons with computer skills and other questions
  • Assist with stacks maintenance in the library – including shifting, shelf reading, and stacks presentation
  • Assist with promoting library programs and services
  • Assist with creating library book displays
  • Performing related projects and tasks as required
